I caught up with Jacqui Lapping to discuss what really drives her, why she joined Impel, and what is the hype about Sustainability and Renewable Energy.

Jacqui comes with over 15 years of specialist recruitment experience, and as a Senior Talent Consultant, she leads talent strategy for clients across Renewables, Sustainability, Energy Management and CleanTech sectors within the UK and Europe.

As part of our Talent Solutions team, Jacqui provides recruitment scale-up solutions by working alongside hiring managers and talent acquisition teams

Jacqui, thank you so much for sitting down with me today. I am so excited to learn more about you and what attracted you to join us here at Impel Talent, but also why you decided to join us in our expansion within Renewable Energy & Sustainability.

“Happy to be here, and happy to share.”

Why did you join Impel Talent?”

The visionary leadership team that was part of interviewing me during their hiring process.  I had the opportunity to experience first-hand how they worked during my initial interactions with the team.  The assessment coupled with their interview questions was very telling of what they valued.  This is when I got a taste of their culture and values.  A culture that is nurturing, raising, and supporting the people around them to the next level.  They fostered values close to my heart such as collaboration, teamwork, respect and trust.

“What do you love about your role?”

“I love dealing with different people from all walks of life on a daily basis. I enjoy listening to my clients, candidates and colleagues and take time to really understand where they are at and how I can support them.

“How did you get into recruitment?

“Purely by accident. I left a large corporate company and started my own business as an independent consultant. After working with a client on market strategy they asked me to help them find the right people to build a team, and that is where it all began.”

“Why did you stay in the industry?!”

I enjoy the diversity of the industry, working with different clients, getting to know their businesses and their world, their challenges which in turn enables me to support them long-term.  I enjoy learning new things every day, the renewables and sustainability sector certainly provides continuous learning as it’s not only one of the fastest-growing sectors but also provides continuous innovation.

“What about  Sustainability really inspires you?

The industry is forever evolving and changing but most important is the positive impact on the environment. Working within the renewable energy and sustainability industry sectors gives me a chance to make a contribution in the development of clean sources of energy, as well as improving efficiency and thereby reducing emissions.

“Why is this an exciting market to work in right now as a candidate?

The opportunities are limitless with the market growth and investment this industry has seen over the last few years.  There are many new industries within this market that are being developed, for example; green hydrogen, battery storage and the electric vehicle markets.

“What is your top tip for hiring managers who are struggling to grow their team?”

“I have a few…

  • Start early with the process as finding a suitable fit can take longer than what you originally anticipated.  Ensure your recruitment strategy and process is mapped out to avoid bottlenecks or delays.
  • Start with getting the job brief right, take the time to reflect and gain input from the relevant stakeholders to make sure you have a thorough and accurate outline of your requirements for the new hire or hires.
  • Think of creative ways of engaging the talent you are looking for through industry bodies or events and use your network for referrals.
  • If you do decide to partner with a recruitment company, ensure there is a fit with regards to values, and ethics and gain an understanding of their process as they are representing your brand in the market.
  • Lastly,  Finding a candidate with the right attitude is just as important as skills, if not more important.”

“What is one piece of advice you wish you could tell yourself 10 years ago?”

“Learn to relax and take more time out for yourself. Work-life balance is very important.”

“What do you do to relax and unwind outside of work?”

“Walking, taking a walk in the parks or farms is peaceful and good exercise.  I love the ocean and spending time soaking up the sun, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving and paddling. Time with the family is always great too.
